Elizabeth Thornton (ET)
Often called the “Queen of Plumerias,” Elizabeth Thornton of Houston, Texas, was a true pioneer. She co-founded the Plumeria Society of America in 1979 and authored the influential book The Exotic Plumeria (Frangipani).
Working with her family, she grew approximately 700 seedlings and selected about 40 superior varieties to name and share. Her introductions — including Mardi Gras, Lemon Drop, Maverick, Texas Aggie, Mauve, Firecracker, and many others — are still highly prized decades later for their reliable performance, beautiful colors, and distinctive fragrances. Thornton varieties are considered classics and remain foundational in many Southern collections.
Jim Little (JL) – Little Plumeria Farms, Hawaii
Jim Little began growing plumeria as a hobby on Oahu in 1973 and went on to create one of the most respected hybridizing programs in the world. He learned controlled cross-pollination from the legendary Bill Moragne and released his first success, JL Pink Pansy.
Over five decades, Jim and his family (now three generations) have introduced a wide range of exotic color combinations, compact growers, dwarfs, and miniatures. JL varieties are known for their uniqueness and quality, and many command premium prices among collectors. Little Plumeria Farms is widely regarded as one of the premier sources of Hawaiian hybrids.
Jungle Jack (JJ)
Jungle Jack’s Plumeria, founded by Jack Ingwersen, develops its varieties in large growing grounds in Thailand from its own seed. These are not renamed existing plants or backyard finds — they are original hybrids selected for distinctive traits such as rounded leaves, strong bloom production, and attractive tree form.
Popular JJ introductions include Gina, Purple Jack, J105, California Sunset, Divine, and many others. Collectors value Jungle Jack varieties because they offer genetics and flower styles that are difficult or impossible to find elsewhere.
Thai Hybridizers: Nui, Kukiat, and SJ
Thailand has become one of the most important centers of modern plumeria hybridizing. Three names frequently mentioned by serious collectors are:
- Nui (Nui Leera) – Known for producing striking, high-impact seedlings with bold multi-color blooms and strong garden performance. Varieties linked to Nui are often vibrant and highly desirable.
- Kukiat (Dr. Kukiat Tanteeratarm) – A highly respected Thai hybridizer whose work includes exceptional and sometimes rare “unicorn” varieties noted for outstanding color, form, and presence.
- SJ – Another recognized Thai source whose introductions are sought after by collectors looking for distinctive Thai genetics.
These Thai hybridizers have expanded the color range, flower forms, and growth habits available to growers worldwide.
Other Notable Names
While the hybridizers above are among the most frequently discussed, the plumeria world also honors earlier pioneers such as Bill Moragne (who made some of the first controlled crosses in Hawaii) and prolific modern developers such as Carl and Joy Herzog in California. Each has contributed important genetics that continue to influence new generations of plants.
