Plumeria Description
JLPink Pansy
This is one of Jim Little’s early hybrids and the one that started his work after Bill Moragne showed him how to make a deliberate cross. Jim named it around 1994. It carries PSA tracking number 155, though the name itself stays on hold because registration rules do not allow the final word to be the name of another plant. Everyone still knows it as Pink Pansy. Carmen is listed as the pod parent.
The flower is about 2.5 inches across. Wide, rounded petals overlap heavily and cup inward, which is what gives it the pansy look. The face is mostly white to soft blush pink with a clear pink edge that runs the length of the petal. The center is a bright yellow to orange-yellow throat. On the reverse there is a red or pink band. The petals have good substance and the blooms hold well once open.
Fragrance is sweet. Growers who have kept it a long time often describe the scent as grape Kool-Aid or candy Sweet Tarts—clean, noticeable, and one of the reasons the variety has stayed popular. It is a reliable bloomer once the plant is mature, and the clusters fill out enough to show the flower shape clearly.
Growth is compact. In a pot it stays manageable; in the ground it builds a denser form than many standard rubra types without becoming tall and open. Branching is fair to good, so it produces multiple tips that carry the blooms rather than staying on one or two long stems.
Because it sets seed readily, a long list of later hybrids have come from Pink Pansy pods. That is part of why the plant remains useful beyond its own flowers. In our South Louisiana heat and humidity it behaves as a steady, compact grower that flowers without special treatment beyond the usual well-drained soil and full sun we give the rest of the grove.
If you want a smaller plant with rounded, overlapping petals, a clear pink edge, a strong yellow throat, and a sweet scent that holds up, JL Pink Pansy is one of the better-documented early Hawaiian hybrids still worth growing.
