Air pruning pots are one of the most effective container systems available for growing healthier, stronger plants — and they are especially well-suited for plumeria in the South.

How Air Pruning Works

Traditional plastic pots force roots to circle around the inside of the container. Over time this creates a tangled, root-bound mass that limits water and nutrient uptake and increases transplant shock.

Air pruning pots solve this problem. The sides of the pot are covered in small openings. When a root tip reaches one of these openings and is exposed to air, it naturally stops growing (it is “air pruned”). The plant responds by sending out new lateral roots. The result is a dense, fibrous root system full of healthy feeder roots instead of circling ones.

We grow our plumeria in air pruning pots because they produce superior root systems that establish quickly and handle Louisiana’s heat, humidity, and heavy rainfall much better than plants grown in standard pots. The excellent drainage helps prevent the root problems that are common in our climate.
